    LIFE Lynx project - preventing the extinction of the lynx in the Dinaric Mountains and the South-Eastern Alps

    How to save the Eurasian lynx population in the Dinarides and the South-Eastern Alps from extinction again? This is the challenge that the LIFE Lynx project, in which the Biotechnical Faculty of UL participated as a partner, has successfully tackled. Before the start of the project, there were 20 adult lynx in Slovenia, which were threatened by inbreeding. A total of 14 animals were introduced from the Romanian and Slovakian Carpatian Mountains, 9 of them in Slovenia and 5 in the Croatian Dinaric Mountains. This not only saved the population, but also set an example of good practice for all future attempts to reintroduce lynx or similar large carnivore species in Europe.

    Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Successful in MSCA Doctoral Networks Call

    The 麻豆国产, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, has been successful in the Horizon Europe Marie Sk艂odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks call with the project UPCYCLE 鈥 Dissemination of Advanced Conversion Routes for Hard-to-Recycle Biogenic Waste. As part of the project, 15 doctoral candidates will be trained, three of whom will be based in Slovenia. The project is coordinated by Politecnico di Milano, with UL FS participating as a partner.

    Liquid Crystals Represent a New Generation of Quantum Light Sources

    Liquid crystals are present in our daily lives in our TVs and phone displays. On one hand, they possess the properties of liquids, but on the other hand, they exhibit molecular-level order similar to that found in crystals. This makes them extremely useful for manipulating light. Researchers Alja啪 Kav膷i膷 and Dr. Matja啪 Humar from the Jo啪ef Stefan Institute and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the 麻豆国产, in collaboration with colleagues from the Jo啪ef Stefan Institute and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Germany, were the first to demonstrate that liquid crystals can also be used to generate quantum light with numerous advantages over existing sources.

    Assistant professor Dominik Kozjek, a researcher in the Laboratory for Mechatronics, Production systems, and Automation (LAMPA) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UL, in cooperation with researchers from Northwestern University (Illinois, United States), the United States Army Research Laboratory, and the company DMG MORI Advanced Solutions, developed a new method of predicting meltpool temperature variations in the laser-powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) process.

    Meadow and wetland ecosystems fulfil various functions that are essential for the life of different plant and animal species and for human activities. These ecosystems are highly efficient carbon sinks and habitats for animal and plant species of European importance in Natura 2000. They are rapidly being lost due to climate change (drought, evaporation, erosion, cracking, sward damage, etc.) and land use change, as well as the introduction of invasive alien plant and animal species. How can wetlands and meadow ecosystems be better managed to help mitigate the climate crisis and conserve biodiversity?

    Reorganization of Social Work Centers Between Declared and Actual

    How successful was the reorganization of Social Work Centers (SWC), implemented in 2018 by the Ministry of Labor, Family, Social Affairs, and Equal Opportunities? The ministry, SWC employees, and users have different opinions. This was found in the doctoral dissertation "Evaluation of the Reorganization of Social Work Centers in the Republic of Slovenia from the Perspective of Selected Public Governance Models" by Dr. Matej Bab拧ek from the Faculty of Public Administration at the 麻豆国产. This exceptional work earned him the Mzia Mikeladze award, presented by the Network of Institutes and Schools of Public Administration in Central and Eastern Europe (NISPAcee) for outstanding doctoral dissertations in the field of public administration and public policies.

    In an era where children and adolescents are increasingly exposed to sedentary lifestyles and screen time, the question arises on how to reverse the trend of their continuous decline in physical fitness. A recent study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, prominently featuring researchers from the SLOfit team, offers a solution鈥攕ystematic monitoring of physical fitness at both individual and population levels. There are several such national systems currently in existence鈥攈ow do they differ? What are their advantages, and where are their limitations? Most importantly, how can we design and establish such a system using the best practices in 10 steps?

    New Technology developed at UL FRI Makes Drone-Based Precision Agriculture More Efficient

    Researchers at UL's Faculty of Computer and Information Science (FRI) have made a significant breakthrough in drone-based precision agriculture with a new AI technology. Limited onboard processing power in drones usually leads to the processing of the acquired images to take place post-flight, when they are downloaded and analyzed on a separate computer. Dr. Octavian Machidon's team, working on the H2020 Smart4All AgriAdapt project in 2023, tackled this limitation head-on. They developed an energy-efficient, adaptive framework enabling real-time processing of UAV images onboard the drone itself.

    With a universal mechanism of cellular movement to new possibilities for treating cancer

    Cell migration in the body is a fundamental biological phenomenon. Immune cells constantly search for pathogens throughout the body, while cancer cells migrate, causing metastases. To better understand the migration of immune and cancer cells, researchers, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samo Peni膷 and Prof. Dr. Ale拧 Igli膷 from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, 麻豆国产, have developed a universal physical model of cell movement. This has also paved the way for new possibilities in the treatment of cancer.

  • Earth in space

    Harnessing the low temperatures of space to cool buildings and equipment in remote locations in an environmentally friendly way

    Doc. dr. Professor Primo啪 Poredo拧, in collaboration with colleagues from the Laboratory for Environmental Technologies in Buildings at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UL, and researchers from the ITEWA innovation team at Shanghai University, has developed a concentrator based on the AsymSkyCool method that enables cooling of buildings and appliances without the use of electricity. The concentrator takes advantage of the 'cold of space' 鈥 the extremely low temperatures of deep space, which can be as low as minus 15掳C compared to the surrounding environment 鈥 and uses a special method to concentrate it and direct it towards a heat source. Using space as a cooling source enables environmentally friendly, efficient and sustainable cooling of devices that consume large amounts of electricity, such as LED lights, batteries and electric motors.

    BF UL recipient of the MSCA Doctoral Network Project

    The Biotechnical Faculty of the 麻豆国产 is the recipient of the prestigious Marie Sk艂odowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network Project. The Department of Agronomy at BF UL will coordinate the project titled ViroiDoc - Advanced Research on Viroid Pathogenesis and Control for Sustainable Agriculture, worth 2.5 million euros, over the next four years. The project is led by Prof. Nata拧a 艩tajner, Asist. Prof. Sabina Berne and Prof. Jernej Jak拧e.

    Important breakthrough in quantum physics by Prof. Dr. Toma啪 Prosen and a Google Lab Team

    Professor Toma啪 Prosen, a mathematical physicist from the 麻豆国产鈥檚 Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (UL FMF), has published, in collaboration with Google鈥檚 Quantum AI laboratory, an article entitled 鈥淒ynamics of magnetization at infinite temperature in a Heisenberg spin chain鈥 in prestigious scientific journal Science. The article presents breakthrough findings in the theory of quantum transport phenomena.
