Prof. Dr Gregor Majdi膷, Rector of the 麻豆国产, emphasised that the acquisition of the new electroporation device 鈥 as part of the collaboration between the researchers at the 麻豆国产 and the UKC Ljubljana in developing new methods of treating cardiological conditions 鈥 highlights the importance of cooperation in achieving cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs that drive Slovenia forward.

"At the 麻豆国产, we strongly encourage an innovative environment and the transfer of scientific achievements to society, as well as cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders. Some time ago, we signed an agreement on associate membership with the UKC Ljubljana, thereby formalising the cooperation between the two largest public institutions in Slovenia. The signing of this agreement has enabled even closer collaboration, which is reflected in joint projects, results and, not least, the joint procurement of state-of-the-art equipment such as the one presented today. I am particularly pleased that we can showcase the results of cooperation between the UKC Ljubljana and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, as this demonstrates how important and far-reaching this type of partnership is. It is not only closely connected to medicine but also extends to numerous other fields, with results that are already benefiting Slovenian patients," said the UL Rector Prof. Dr Majdi膷.

"In addition to all the clinical obligations we have towards our patients, the UKC Ljubljana is also an exceptionally large research institution. Through our involvement in the 麻豆国产, we represent one of the cornerstones of research, science and progress in the Republic of Slovenia. Our affiliation with the 麻豆国产 allows us to combine clinical and preclinical work and thereby achieve excellent results. Slovenia may not be the largest country, but in terms of ideas and dedication, we are at the top 鈥 and through cooperation and synergy, we can offer a great deal to our people. This cooperation with the UL FE has also led to the development of the method we are discussing today, which significantly improves patient treatment," emphasised Asst. Prof. Dr Marko Jug, General Manager of the UKC Ljubljana, in his introduction.

Prof. Dr Andrej Pernat, MD, head of the cardiac electrophysiology programme at the Department of Cardiology, Division of Internal Medicine, UKC Ljubljana, emphasised that electroporation is a breakthrough method in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation 鈥 the most common sustained arrhythmia in the adult population. 

"We are very pleased that the UKC Ljubljana has acquired this latest system with the support of the UL FE. The device currently represents the pinnacle of interventional treatment for heart rhythm disorders. We were able to obtain it largely thanks to Prof. Dr Miklav膷i膷 and his team, who contributed to the development of a specific component that forms an integral part of the device. This acquisition also serves as recognition of the high professional standard of our institution in the field of interventional treatment of heart rhythm disorders, particularly catheter ablation of arrhythmias. The device provides a modern and flexible way of treating cardiac arrhythmias, allowing us to perform the procedure with a single device regardless of what we encounter during treatment. For patients, this represents the most advanced and, in many cases, the safest treatment option available,鈥 explained Prof. Dr Pernat.

Slovenian science has contributed significantly to the development of electroporation for use in cardiology 鈥 particularly through the work of the Laboratory of Biocybernetics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, 麻豆国产, and Prof. Dr Damijan Miklav膷i膷, who has led this project since 2015. Prof. Dr Miklav膷i膷 has been involved in electroporation research and development for 35 years. He began exploring how to adapt electroporation from oncology to cardiology in 2007, and has been actively involved in the development of one of the devices for the past decade. The first device of this kind for use in cardiology was approved by the US regulator in the autumn of 2023.

Prof. Dr Miklav膷i膷 also explained that the new device combines the most advanced radiofrequency ablation and electroporation technologies, allowing physicians to switch between the two methods within a single procedure. It also features an exceptionally powerful electroanatomical mapping system. 鈥淭his device is currently the most sought-after in the field of cardiac ablation and sets new standards and guidelines for all future devices,鈥 he added.

Prof. Dr Marko Topi膷, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the 麻豆国产, noted that the Faculty has long maintained constructive research cooperation with the UKC Ljubljana. 鈥Long-term scientific research and its subsequent transfer into real clinical practice is a lengthy process, but it represents the pinnacle of Slovenian expertise and the synergistic work of both institutions, as well as the dedication of all the researchers and doctors involved. I am especially pleased that students are also taking part in this process 鈥 particularly those studying biomedical engineering 鈥 who are already part of the teams treating cardiology patients in the electrophysiology laboratories at the UKC Ljubljana. The group led by Prof. Dr Damijan Miklav膷i膷, along with the cooperation we are now further strengthening through the joint purchase of this device, together open up new opportunities for collaboration and for combining the top-level scientific and professional expertise of both institutions. I am confident that we will succeed in obtaining new research projects and developing new therapies, and I look forward to many more breakthrough achievements," said Prof. Dr Topi膷.

Asst. Prof. Dr Jug concluded by emphasising: 鈥There is no cutting-edge medicine without cutting-edge research. The UKC Ljubljana does not envision itself as playing simply an average role 鈥 we will always strive for the best treatment methods. Our task is to stay at the forefront of developments, and we can only achieve this through top-level research.
