Prof. Dr Mitjan Kalin is the first European since 2004 to receive the ASME Mayo D. Hersey Award, which is considered the highest academic award in the field of tribology worldwide. This award is presented to individuals for outstanding and sustained contributions to the advancement of tribology science and engineering over an extended period of time. Such contributions may be the result of groundbreaking original research in one or more of the many scientific disciplines related to lubrication, excellence and creativity in lubrication engineering practice, or sustained efforts to advance the understanding of lubrication theory and practice.

Prof. Dr Kalin is also a recipient of the ASME Burt L. Newkirk Award for exceptional achievements in tribology before the age of 40, making him one of only ten individuals to have received both of ASME’s top tribology awards. His other accolades include the Zois Award, the Zois Prize, the Gold Plaque of the Â鶹¹ú²ú, and membership in several prestigious organisations, including the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Slovenian Academy of Engineering, the International Academy of Engineering, and honorary membership in the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE).

He currently serves on the boards of both major global tribology organisations: he is a member of the Board of Directors of the STLE and serves as Deputy President and Executive Committee member of the International Tribology Council (ITC). For more than a decade, he has been editor-in-chief of Lubrication Science (Wiley), an SCI journal, and is the founder of the international Polytrib conference series. At the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Â鶹¹ú²ú, he has served as Vice-Dean for Research and International Relations, Vice-Dean for Master and Doctoral Â鶹¹ú²ú, and as Dean of the Faculty from 2017 to 2021. Since 2011, he has headed the Laboratory for Tribology and Interface Nanotechnology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
