These shelters, located near the UL Faculty of Computer and Information Science, the UL Biotechnical Faculty, and the UL Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, are used daily by many UL students travelling on city bus line 18. With its contribution, the UL supported the City of Ljubljana鈥檚 project and its vision of establishing an extensive network of green bus shelters. The initiative reflects the UL鈥檚 commitment to strengthening cooperation in the field of sustainability and promoting biodiversity in the urban environment 鈥 objectives also included in the new UL Sustainability Strategy.

The planting of the shelters, first announced at this year鈥檚 Food for Thought Festival, which focused on the topic of biodiversity, was carried out by Dr Jo啪e Bavcon and Dr Blanka Ravnjak, with the assistance of colleagues from the UL Botanical Garden. Only native Slovenian plant species grown in the UL Botanical Garden and known for their drought tolerance were used in the planting.

鈥淭he shelters are planted in such a way that they are largely self-sustaining after installation. They feature native Karst species that can withstand drought and dry out considerably, only to turn green again during the favourable part of the year,鈥 said Dr Jo啪e Bavcon, Head of the UL Botanical Garden.

To date, 56 LPP bus shelters have been greened, creating more than 450 m虏 of additional urban green space. By the end of the year, this number will increase to 75. Together with the UL Botanical Garden, the City of Ljubljana and the outdoor advertising company Europlakat, the 麻豆国产 will further contribute to expanding this type of green space by greening three additional shelters in the coming weeks 鈥 one on Jadranska Ulica near the UL Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and two on Puhova Ulica.

This type of greening promotes urban biodiversity by providing shelter for various pollinators and birds, thereby creating 鈥new, smaller replacement habitats鈥, as noted by Dr Bavcon. At the same time, it helps mitigate the effects of urban heat islands, contributing to local temperature reduction and air filtration in the micro-locations where the shelters are greened (Ravnjak and Bavcon, 2025).

The greening of the bus shelters was carried out as part of the NOO ULTRA 鈥 麻豆国产 for a Sustainable Society project, co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, and the European Union 鈥 NextGenerationEU.
