Assist. Prof. Dr. Meta Sterniša impressed the jury with her innovative scientific contributions to understanding meat spoilage and the behaviour of microorganisms in food systems. Her research includes uncovering physiological mechanisms in bacteria that cause meat spoilage and seeking new sustainable solutions to reduce food loss, including the use of natural antimicrobial compounds and advanced packaging materials. The jury also highlighted her contribution to developing innovative approaches to prevent the formation of bacterial biofilms on food contact surfaces, which significantly contributes to improved food safety and quality.

In addition to her research work, she contiributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the department, takes part in international and national research projects, and serves as a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Food Microbiology.
